Unfortunately we rarely do events’ reviews however we had a blast last Thursday night so we would like to share and highly recommend an event to all of the fashionistas from Dallas. If you live in the area you have probably heard about the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition – “From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” in the Dallas Museum of Art? It is going on since November 13th and we will have the pleasure of hosting it for 10 more days or until February 12th. So if you have been wondering if this is something you would like to visit we would give you several reasons to make up your mind quickly and go see it. And you don’t have to be into fashion to enjoy it. The first thing that amused me was the crowd – all ages, men, women, teens, and most importantly – tons of people. I honestly didn’t expect the event to be so impressive. Probably for most of the girls dreaming about going to New York or Milano Fashion Weeks that is the closest we would get to a real designer’s couture collection. And which designer – the boldest, the most extravagant, the true genius.
No wonder the exhibition is held in the DMA – every piece from the couture gowns to the 80s corsets worn by Madonna and her dancers are fine pieces of art. You stare at the dresses and you wonder “how can a person make this?” and then you are “wait a minute – how can a person think of creating that?” Yes – it is beyond amazing, every detail, every color, every thread is in the perfect place. JPG worked with many celebrities including Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kylie Minogue. He created the costumes for movies like the 5th Element, Pedro Amoldovar and Luc Besson films. His life journey is overwhelming to read as well as what famous people have said for him. When it comes to Jean Paul Gaultier and designers from his class fashion is no longer about garments. It is a complicated mix of art, imagination, couture, extravagancy and uniqueness. There are no limits. Men are wearing skirts and women are too confident to cover their bodies. You look around and there isn’t a single model wearing something simple. The moment you think you found one – look closer – is it just a skirt and a jacket or a trouser jumpsuit featuring skirt and half jacket with a hat all in one??? That whole world will capture you, you will not know what to expect – what is fiction and where is reality. Is there really people living in this fabulous world, wearing these gorgeous clothes, walking in these hot shoes and looking at all of us with contempt?
Thanks to the DMA for turning a fashion exhibit into a one of a kind runaway show – it was worth every cent of the $16.00!
