This post is different from what we usually talk about on My-Vogue, however I’ve decided it is time to give a few fashion tips for the plus size ladies or just any fashionista who would like to prepare for the coming season. Winter is most definitely on its way but while the temperature drops, it’s time to ramp up the heat in the style stakes!
Colder weather often sees women retreat into baggy, shapeless and uninteresting clothing. But there’s no reason to forget your fashion sensibilities in the darker months of the year.
Larger ladies should always use their shape to their advantage and maximise their best assets. Heavy jumpers and leggings are extremely comfortable and definitely protect against the cold, but big, unstructured clothing is far from slimming. Follow these tips to make sure your winter wardrobe is up to scratch.
1. Dress for every occasion
It is important to make sure you have a range of clothes for casual situations, work wear and dressier events. Alongside your cable-knit jumpers, you should have a beautiful array of plus size ladies evening tops, which can be matched with everything from a good fitting pair of jeans to a sexy pencil skirt.
2. Layers are the key
The best way to keep yourself warm, without having to buy an entire new wardrobe, is to layer your existing items. A t-shirt with a stylish shirt and boyfriend-cut cardigan, alongside a bootcut pair of jeans, is a great weekend day outfit. You can then throw on a sequined blouse for cocktails, or switch into a skirt for a night in a restaurant. If you layer your clothes, you can quickly and easily adapt your outfit for any occasion.
3. Materials
There are certain materials that are better suited to winter dressing than others. Woolens are obviously perfect for everyday tops jumpers, cardigans, etcetera while sheer materials can be combined with cottons to add a more luxurious effect while still being warm and comfortable. In terms of jackets and trousers, denim can sometimes be a hinderance, as it takes a long time to dry if it gets wet. This doesn’t make them an absolute no-no, but opting for cotton trousers on a wet day (and staying well clear of denim jackets) may be a good idea!
4. Accessories make or break an outfit
Choosing the right accessories can take an outfit from a summer/autumn get-up to a perfect winter combo. Take a grey jersey pencil skirt and cream blouse: ideal for summer days with bare legs and sandals. To turn it into a winter choice, add 80 denier tights in black (or a bold colour such a fuchsia, for a touch of real style); a cable-knit cardigan in a complementary colour; an oversize print scarf in a light material, which can be wrapped around for warmth; a furry trapper hat in a similar print and wool-lined ankle boots. Perfect as the temperature drops!
5. Dont be afraid to experiment
Regardless of the season, being brave with your fashion choices will stand you in good stead. Dress to your shape and choose items you are comfortable in, but experiment with colour and fabrics in order to liven up your look.
