This summer, the fashion runaways have been set on fire by broomstick skirts and peasant tops, which can only mean one thing— the bohemian look is back. At first, I thought Id ignore the bohemian trend as I figured it was only weekend appropriate and I couldnt justify investing in a new wardrobe that could only be worn two days a week. However, after quieting my soul (VERY bohemian, right?) I realized that my hippie heart can be satisfied even while sitting at my desk.
Never underestimate the power of accessories
There are certain times when wearing a floppy hat, maxi skirt, and open-toed shoes is whimsical, and there are times when no matter how free-wheeling your heart may feel, the important business meeting requires slacks and blazers. Dont feel oppressed by The Man; embrace the blazer and pair it with a feather charm necklace or large turquoise earrings. While youll look boardroom saavy, your earlobes will be bonfire and beach ready. The moment the meeting ends all youll need are your favorite jeans to feel like yourself again!
Bohemian is about balance
While its wonderful to see the double takes that happen when youre wearing the perfect cute outfit, sometimes simply knowing in your head that your look is laced with crane-the-neck-ability is enough. Wear the slacks. Wear the blazer, but underneath the blazer wear a flirty top and either let your jacket remain unbuttoned, or make the edge of the fabric visible. The glimpses of paisley will remind you that while you are in a climate controlled environment, where you actually belong is in a field of wildflowers—maybe doing cartwheels.
Embrace casual Friday
Fridays are your chance to let it all hang out (not literally, of course!) and be the bohemian babe you long to be. If youre not quite ready to push your office attire boundaries, then feel confident wearing the traditional casual Friday uniform of jeans and a blouse, but trade in your briefcase for a fringe purse or cross-body bag.
Follow the spirit of the law
In the truest sense of the word, those who are bohemian are those who embrace and enjoy life. The bohemian look is about freedom, art, and beauty. If you cant wear your hand crocheted sweater to work, then make sure that you take at least one moment to sit down by a river and sketch (regardless of your artistic ability), lock yourself in your bedroom and sing full voiced to your favorite songs, or spend a night with your closest friends drinking wine, laughing until you cry, and eating great food. Because more than clothes, what we could all really use is more of the bohemian spirit— seven days a week.
